- Key - I D E A S* 👇📝 00:00 Intro In this episode of book club we're looking at Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin which looks at how we can transform our relationship with money, work and our lives. It has been a best selling book for nearly 3 decades and in this video we look at a couple of the key themes including how we should define work, what is 'enough' and why we should equate money with life energy.
00:27 Redefining Work
We are not making a living from work, as most people come home from work physically and mentally drained, and not refreshed and rejuvenated.
We often say that we value things like friends & family, and yet most of our time is devoted to our jobs.
We are not making a living from work, we are making a dying.
01:58 What is enough
_If you live for having it all, what you have is never enough. In an environment of more is better, ‘enough’ is like the horizon, always receding. You lose the ability to identify that point of sufficiency at which you can choose to stop_
Life starts --> (we think) more possessions = more fulfilment as we get our basic needs taken care of
As we move from the bare necessities to the niceties, the positive relationship between new things and fulfilment becomes more deeply embedded. We then move to luxuries and that is it. We associate more $ = more fulfilment Hedonic adaptation much? Research show that more money does not bring more happiness.
Ask yourself _Where is your enough?_
03:24 Money = Life Energy
Money is what we exchange our life energy for.
Every expense = the amount of life energy that we've given up to earn the money to buy it.
Once you learn this, you can calculate the life energy needed to buy a specific thing and decide whether or not it is worth it.
This is why it is better to invest in yourself and your skills. To improve your thinking and learning skills, visit https://brilliant.org/ali and sign up for free. The first 200 people will get 20% off the annual Premium subscription :)
05:08 Three Key Questions About Life Energy
You can use the below questions before buying something:
_1. Did I receive fulfilment, satisfaction & value in proportion to the energy spent?_ _2. Is this expenditure of life energy in alignment with my values & life purpose?_
_3. How might this expenditure change if I didn't have to work for money?_
